About Salem
Salem pronunciation is a city and a municipal corporation in Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located in the north central part of the southern most state of India, it is the Fifth largest city of Tamil Nadu, after Chennai, Madurai,Coimbatore and Trichy. Almost completely surrounded by hills, . It is also a part of the Kongu Nadu(Tirupur and Coimbatore) region. Salem is at the base of the renowned tourist destination of Yercaud hills, which offers breathtaking views both along the ride up the hill and from the peak. There are also remote sites of beauty such as Kiliyur Falls.[1] Yercaud is at an altitude of 1600 m above mean sea level.
The city is surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of hills formed by the Nagaramalai to the north, the Jeragamalai to the south, the Kanjanamalai to the west, and Godumalai to the east. It is divided by the Thirumanimuthar in the main division. The fort is the oldest building in town.
The name Salem appears to have been derived from Sela or Shalya which are found in inscriptions referring to the country around the hills. Local folklore believes Salem to be the birth place of the Tamil poetess Avvaiyar. Inscriptions from the Ganga dynasty have been recovered from parts of the district.
Salem along with Coimbatore remained under the Madurai Nayaks. Later, in the early 18th Century, it came under Hyder Ali after a long feud know as Mysore-Madurai war. Salem was then taken from Hyder Ali by Colonel Wood in the beginning of 1768. It was recaptured by Hyder towards the end of the year 1772. Under Lord Clive in 1799, it was again occupied by a detachment of the regiment stationed at Sankari Drug (pronounced as droog) and remained a military station until 1861 when the troops were altogether withdrawn.
Many great personalities including Salem Ramasamy Mudaliar, C. Vijayaraghavachariar, Pagadala Narasimhalu Naidu, C. Rajagopalachari(Rajaji) , and Dr. P. Subbarayan started their political careers in Salem.
CULTURE
Culture Tamilnadu has a great tradition of heritage and culture that developed over 2,000 years ago and still continues to flourish. This great cultural heritage of the state of Tamilnadu evolved through the rule of dynasties that ruled the state during various phases of history. Many of the ruling dynasties gave patronage to art and culture that resulted into the development and evolution of a unique Dravidian culture that Tamilnadu today symbolizes with.
Under the rule of the Pallavas, Cholas and the Pandya kings, there were tremendous growth and development in the field of art, architecture and literature, which reached great heights. The history of Tamil language can be traced back to the age of the Tolkapiyam, the Tamil Grammar text, ascribed to around 500 B.C. Similarly, the Sangam literature dates back to 500 B.C.
People of Tamilnadu Tamil Nadu is one of the most urbanized states of India but most of the people still live in villages. In Tamil Nadu, there is an established caste system with traditional differentiations a lot more pronounced than in many other parts of India. A large part of population is confined to the Chennai (covering industrial areas, townships and the surrounding villages) and those around Madurai, Tiruchchirappall and Coimbatore. About 80 percent of the people in Tamil Nadu follow Hinduism. A substantial percentage of population in Tamil Nadu follows Christianity and Islam.
SCHOOL
Salem, which was once considered the most educationally backward district in Tamil Nadu, now has a few good educational institutions. New schools and colleges have come up recently. Government College of Engineering was started during the Third Five Year plan in the year 1966 and is located on a beautiful 162 hectares site surrounded by hills. This was then the third government engineering institution in Tamil Nadu. The first batch of students was selected for the academic year 1966-67 for courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. In the year 1973-74, the Metallurgical Engineering branch was started. Electronics and Communication branch was introduced in the year 1985-86. Computer Science engineering course was introduced in the year 2001. The Government Arts and Science College situated in Salem is one of the oldest colleges in the district. It is more than 3000 years old.
Now Salem region has about 200+ Engineering colleges(Even then most of then prefer Coimbatore or Chennai for engineering), 2 medical colleges, 79 other colleges and two universities. Many good schools in the salem district are worth mentioning. They are on par and sometimes exceed in all round development of students compared to the schools in citys like Chennai, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Madurai. STEEL PLANT
Salem Steel Plant (SSP) is a premier producer of international quality stainless steel in India. Commissioned in 1981, the Plant has a capacity to roll 1,86,000 tones of hot rolled carbon and stainless steel flat products and 70,000 tones of cold rolled stainless steel sheets and coils per annum. The Plant has gone beyond its designed capacity and successfully cold rolled value added 0.13 mm thick stainless steel.
SSP can also supply hot rolled carbon steel in thick nesses of 1.5, 1.4 and 1.25 mm. Its products have become a household name ‘Salem Stainless’ in the domestic market and are widely exported; besides meeting the requirements of 100 per cent export oriented units and free-trade zones in India. In hot rolled special grade carbon steels, SSP has been recognized as a well-known manufacturer of boiler quality steel. The Plant is also supplying LPG grade IS 6240 steel in sheet form. The entire Plant is certified for the ISO: 9001:2000 Quality Assurance and the ISO: 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
A Blanking Line, the first of its kind in India, was established in 1993, with an annual capacity to produce 3000 tonnes of ferritic grade coin blanks or 3600 tonnes of utility blanks. Coinage of Re 1, 50 paise and 25 paise denominations are minted from the blanks supplied by SSP to the Government Mint in Noida, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.
SSP has revolutionized application of stainless steel in India both in conventional and unconventional areas. High-tech industries like atomic power stations prefer 'Salem Stainless'. It is also chosen in industrial sectors like dairy and food processing, chemical and fertilizer, heavy engineering, railways, automobile, bulk solid handling, power etc. The building and architecture segment, which is growing at a rapid pace, sees 'Salem Stainless' as the most dependable companion.
SSP undertakes turnkey projects like fabrication and supply of stainless steel tubes, pipes for sugar and chemical industry and for water pipelines. Under conversion scheme, value-added products like kitchen & tableware and doorframes are manufactured and supplied in bulk to corporates. SSP has also developed new application of its products, viz. LPG tanks for automobile, stainless steel ceiling fans, exhaust fans, corrugated sheets, water tanks, etc.
In architecture, building and construction, the prestigious structure where ‘Salem Stainless’ was chosen include the Parliament House Library Complex, New Delhi, the world’s tallest twin buildings -- the Petronas Twin-Towers, in Malaysia and the retractable roofing at the Melbourne Tennis Stadium, Australia. The coaches of the high speed Jan Shatabdi Express trains are furnished with modular rail marts and sub pantries made entirely of Salem Stainless. Korean blue resin coated corrugated curved roofing of the Koparkhairane Railway Station and the copper tan shade-coloured roofing of the the Airoli railway station in Navi Mumbai is a trendsetter for railways in India.

Mariamman Temple :There are several mariamman temples in Salem. Mariamman is a Hindu goddess, an incarnation of Shakti. Every year around July the city celebrates Mariamman festival for a fortnight. During this festival, Goddess Mariamman is decorated with jewellery and flower chariots and taken around the city at midnight. On the first important day of the festival, people walk on fire The second day is colourful with parades of fancy dress.
This is one of the best times to visit Salem. This festival is celebrated at temples at Fort, Shevapet, Ammapet, Gugai, Andheripati etc. Shevapet Mariamman temple caris the biggest one among the cars of Amman temples across the state. This festival is celebrated for a week. The Kottai Marriamman temple is very famous not only in Salem but throughout Tamil Nadu.
Alagirnathar Thirukoil Temple : This temple popularly known as "Kottai Perumal Koil", located at the heart of the city. The temple has been built centuries ago and has some beautiful sculptures. "Vaikunda Ekadasi" is the most famous festival in the temple and on that day, lakhs of devotees visit the temple.
The Sugavaneshwarar temple : This is also very important shrine of Salem. Mythology records that sage sugha brahmarishi worshipped the lord here. Arunagirinadhar has sung a song on Lord Muruga in Sugavaneshwarar temple.
Kandashramam temple : It is a small hill temple for Lord Muruga . It is situated 10 km from Salem City towards Chennai highway. Kandashramam houses statues of unique and vital gods. It has the statues of Panchamukha Anjaneya, Panchamukha Vinayagar, Swarna Bhairavar, Dhanvanthri, etc,. In Salem City, at Seelanaickenpatty there is another hill for Lord Murugan. Hill is named as Oothumalai.
Kumaragiri Temple :This is a small temple for Lord Muruga. It is situated 5km from Salem city.Two more mountain temples are there in Salem for Lord Vishnu.Salem also has Heritage Temple called Sitthar Koil, which is located about 10 km from Salem. This is a Shiva Temple, which is located on the foot hills of Kanja Malai. Some believers say that, this temple was built by Sitthar`s which is believed that they still survive in the Mount of Kanja Malai. The famous Tamil Poetess Avvayar is believed to be living in this hills.Aragaluris located approximately 21 km from Attur that boast of 2 old temples and a large Buddha statue. The one day Temple car festival in summer invites lots of people in the region.
The Kailasanatha Temple : This temple situated at Tharamangalam is very famous for its architectural beauty. The Tharamangalam temple has many beautiful sculptures, note worthy amongst them are the sculptures of Arjuna`s penace, Shiva-Parvati & Manmadha, Rama killing Vaali, etc.
There are ancient Shiva temples at Belur(Thanthondreeshwarar) and Uttamacholapuram(Karaburanathar).
Ayothiappattanam : It is located 7 km away from city houses a beautiful Kothandaramar temple.A Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama is located in Salem. It is was started in 1928 and made a branch of the mission in 1941.

Yercaud Lake
The Yercaud Lake, a picturesque pool surrounded by gardens and trees, is one of the main attractions of Yercaud. You can enjoy boating at the Yercaud Lake. If you like to paddle the boat yourself then the paddling boats are a good option otherwise you also have the option of the boatman rowing it for you as you relax in the calm waters of the Lake.
Lady's Seat
Lady's seat is name given to a cluster of rocks on the south west side of Yercaud. There is a steep drop of about 200 feet below from this point. One gets a panoramic view of distant Salem and the winding road up.
Killiyur Falls
The Killiyur waterfall is located at a distance of about 3 km from the Yercaud Lake. The ideal time to visit the waterfall is immediately after the monsoons. You can see the surplus water from the Yercaud Lake and other points of the Shevaroy Hills fall deep into the Killiyur Valley below, making a 300 feet waterfall.
The Grange
The Grange is one of the oldest buildings in Yercaud, built in 1820's by the then District Collector of Salem, M D Cockburn.
Bear's Cave
The Bear's cave is situated near the Norton Bungalow on the way to Servarayan temple. It is an important tourist spot as it is considered one of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya.
The Servarayan Temple
The Servarayan temple is situated atop the Servarayan hill. The temple is a narrow and dark cave having the God Servarayan and the Goddess Kaveri inside, which the Shevaroy Hills and the Cauvery River. The local tribes celebrate their annual festival in the Servarayan temple during the month of May.

¤ The Harvest Festival 'Pongal'
Pongal, known as the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Tamil Nadu. This festival is celebrated to extend tribute to the Sun, Nature and the Cattle wealth for helping farmers with a rich harvest and prosperity. The traditional dish of 'Pongal' i.e. boiling rice with jaggery and milk, is prepared at every home. On the day of Pongal, families gather around a new earthen pot, at dawn time. As the pot of milk boils over, signifying prosperity, a shout of "Pongalo Pongal" fills the air. This thanks- giving festival is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil Month Thai (Middle of January).
¤ Chithirai Festival at Madurai The venue of Chithirai Festival is the famous Madurai temple, 500 kms. from Chennai. This festival starts from the beginning of the Tamil month Chithirai, and ends on the tenth day of the month. Madurai presents a spectacular re-enactment of the marriage of the Pandiyan princess Meenakshi to Lord Sundareswarar. One can witness an ancient legend unfold right before one's eyes as Lord Vishnu rides to his sister's wedding on gleaming real-gold horse chariot. The celebration is filled with excitement and enthusiasm.
¤ Dance Festivals At Mamallapuram The Dance Festival starts on the 25th of December every year and is held on all Saturdays. There are open air stages build around 13 centuries ago. The incredible monolithic rock sculptures of the Pallavas are situated next to the sea in this ancient city of Mamallapuram. This event is a treat for those who love dance. Bharatha Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali and Odissi dance performances are presented by the best of classical dancers.
¤ The Natyanjail Dance Festivals This festival starts from the day of Mahashivarathri for 5 days at Chidambaram which is situated along the coast of the Bay of Bengal, 75 kms. south of Pondicherry. The temple city of Chidambaram pays special tribute to Lord Nataraja the 'Cosmic dancer'. The temple is set in a truly divine atmosphere. The Chidambaram's gold-roofed temple, with pillars, depict Lord Nataraja in 108 poses from Bharatha Natyam, Tamil Nadu's classical dance.
¤ The Mahamagam Festival Mahamagam festival is a holy festival that brings one to Kumbakonam once in 12 years, the city of temples that gets its name from "Kumbha", the divine pot. According to the legends, Brahma, the creator, held a pot containing nectar and the seed of creation. Shiva. in the form of a hunter shot an arrow at the pot, consequently spilling the nectar into the famous Mahamagam tank at the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple.
¤ The Aurbathimoovar Festival The word 'Arubathimoovar' literally refers to the 63 saints of Shiva glorified for leading worthy lives of devotion and penance. Bronze figures of these 63 saints decorate the magnificent Kapaliswar Temple at Mylapore, Chennai. Once, every year, they are carried in a colorful procession through the streets of Mylapore.
¤ The Saral Vizha ( Kuttalm or Courtallm ) This festival is nothing more than a celebration of a simple, daily ritual bathing. and indeed, a bath at the picturesque Courtallam waterfalls is no ordinary event. The healing waters of the roaring Courtallam are famous for their medicinal properties.
¤ The Kanthuri Festival The Kanthuri festival is truly a secular festival, where devotees gather at the shrine of saint Quadirwali. It is believed to do equal good to people of all faiths. One of the descendants of the Saint is chosen as a Peer or spiritual leader and is honored with offerings. The tenth day of the festival, is the day when Saint's tomb is anointed with sandalwood and later the holy sandal paste, famous for its healing powers, is distributed to everyone.
